Mike Severns was elected President and CEO of Employers Council effective July 1, 2002. Only the fifth president in Employers Council's 78-year history, he joined the company in 1979 after finishing law school. From 1996 through 2002, Mike was Vice President of Employers Council having responsibility for labor and employment law attorneys, information technology, and the first regional office. Mike began his career with the Employers Council as an attorney in the Labor Relations Department, then moved on to become Director of that department in 1989. Mike has contributed time and energy to the community through various organizations. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Boy Scouts of America Denver Area Council, the Workers Compensation Coalition, and the Employer Associations of America, as well as serving as an ex-officio Board member of the Colorado Judicial Institute. He is serving now as the Vice President of Membership for the Denver Area Council, BSA. He is the Immediate Past Chair of the Employers Associations of America, the national trade association for employer councils around the country. He is a member of the Colorado and Denver Bar Associations and Colorado Concern.
Kimberley (Kim) is the COO of Employers Council, a comprehensive resource for employers in the areas of employment and labor law, human resources, surveys and training. Kim joined Employers Council in 2000. From 2000 – 2005, Kim worked with Employers Council members in employment law related matters. From 2005 -2014, Kim was the Director of the Southern Regional Office of Employers Council concentrating on business and member development in southern Colorado. Prior to Employers Council, Kim worked in employment and insurance defense for Burg & Eldredge, P.C. in Inverness, Colorado and completed a clerkship with Denver District Court. She has a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a minor in English from Washington State University and a Juris Doctorate from University of Denver, College of Law. Kim oversees the member service departments at Employers Council: Employment Law Services, Human Resources Services, Surveys, and the Member Engagement Department.
Kim currently serves on the Certification Committee for the National Strength and Conditioning Association, currently serves on the Griffith Centers for Children and the Colorado Judicial Institute’s Board of Directors. She served as a Board of Director for Rocky Mountain Health Care Services for six years, is a graduate of Leadership Pikes Peak class of 2004, and was recognized as a Woman of Influence by the Colorado Springs Business Journal in 2008.
Deborah oversees these Employers Council departments: Human Resources, Specialized Legal Services, Organizational Development and Learning, Outsourced Consulting Services, and Marketing and Sales. Deborah began working at the Council in 1988. She was promoted to Director of the Management Development Department in 1996, the Outsourced Consulting Services Department in 2002, and the Membership Development Department in 2004. Before coming to the Council, Deborah worked with associations on legislative analysis and the development and design of training for state and federal agencies. Deborah has a BA and MA from the University of Colorado and is a SPHR and a SHRM-SPC. She serves on the boards of Senior’s Resource Center, the Denver Office of Strategic Partnerships, New America Schools and Colorado Nonprofit Association. She is an affiliate faculty member at Metro State University of Denver.
Bill Smith began his career with the Employers Council as an employment law services attorney in 1994. Since that time he has worked in the Labor Relations Department, Colorado Springs Regional Office, Membership Development Department and the Arizona Office. He was the first Arizona President for the Employers Council and still resides in Scottsdale. In 2017 he became VP of Regional Offices which includes Loveland, Colorado Springs, Salt Lake City and Scottsdale. Bill’s new role is to help expand the Employers Council brand through the growth of regional offices. He was instrumental in opening the first MSEC Regional office in Colorado Springs in 2000. Following the opening of the Colorado Springs Office, he played an active role in the creation of the Fort Collins Office in 2007 which has since moved to Loveland. In 2009, Bill helped open the first office located outside of Colorado when MSEC opened the Arizona Office. With the recent merger involving the Utah Employers Council, Bill has been given the privilege of working closely with the new Utah President of the Employers Council in expanding its membership base in Utah. As the Employers Council’s members are expanding and growing into different regions of the Western States, so is the Employers Council’s support of those employers. As an Employment Law Services attorney and later a Labor Relations attorney he has assisted members with union matters, including collective bargaining, grievances and union avoidance. Prior to working for the Employers Council, Bill worked in the Employee Relations department at Mississippi Power Company, a subsidiary of the Southern Company. He received his law degree from Mississippi College, an MBA from William Carey University, and his undergraduate degree in criminal justice from Jacksonville State University. For a few years following college Bill worked in law enforcement. While he was a police officer he also serviced as a Petty Officer Third Class in the US Coast Guard Reserve. He is currently an active member of the Colorado and Arizona Bar Associations.
Michelle Jacobsen was promoted to Vice President of Employers Council in 2019 and she currently oversees the member services departments: Human Resource Services, Surveys, and Employment Law Services. Over the years, Michelle has worked for Employers Council as a Staff Attorney in the Northern Regional Office, as the Director of the Southern Regional Office, and as the Director of Employment Law Services. Michelle’s other professional experience includes working as an investigator for the State of Wyoming, private legal practice, and she served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel for a large community bank. Michelle earned a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Wyoming, she was a graduate of Leadership Pikes Peak Signature class of 2016 and she also served on their Board of Trustees. Michelle holds the Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification and is a SHRM Senior Certified Professional. She is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Wyoming and is a member of the Colorado and Wyoming Bar Associations.
Julie McLaughlin serves as Chief Financial Officer for Employers Council, having joined the EC team in 2005. Julie has over 20 years’ experience in providing financial services including accounting, budgeting, contracts, strategic analysis, payroll, treasury, income tax, risk management, forecasting, and reporting. Julie’s responsibilities extend to many areas of Employers Council operations, but her primary role is to manage and direct all activities and policies related to financial accounting, business processes, budgeting, income tax, retirement plans, insurance, financial analysis and reporting. McLaughlin graduated from Mankato State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and is a CPA. Prior to Employers Council, Julie was the Controller for Fresh Produce Retail, Inc., a 12 store multi-state retail clothing company headquartered in Boulder, Colorado. Julie has also worked for local and national CPA firms performing financial statement audits for a variety of industries including not-for-profits, construction, manufacturing, retail, and employee benefit plans.
Julie is a member of the Colorado Society of Certified Public Accountants. Julie is originally from South Dakota but enjoys all Colorado has to offer. She enjoys, running events, gardening, paddle boarding, relays, biking and triathlons. She is married and enjoys living in “rural” Longmont/Frederick.
